The Gosport Ferry (does what it says on the can), originally uploaded by Rusty Marvin (feel free to comment) aka WYSIWYG.
P1190093 - The short is from Portsmouth Hard looking towards Gosport. This ferry runs every ten minutes or so, flat bottomed and built for rapid loading and unloading of foot passengers, it also carries motor bike and cycles. Saves a long drive up one side of the harbour (inlet) and back down again.
Portsmouth is a Naval base and has been from at least Henry VIII time, and was once a fully functional ship yard, although the fleet is depleted the Naval is still present. Gosport was the Submarine base and is now a museum.
As you can see the leisure sailing activity is become quite established. Further up the harbour is the continental ferry port and docks.
