TWO new supermarkets could be built next to the Asda store in Newport.
South Coast Leisure (SCL), which owns the land, has sought permission for two food retail units at the St George's Park site.
They would be built on the site currently occupied by Newport Football Club and an adjacent area of land, which SCL bought from the Isle of Wight Council for £350,000.
When the deal was agreed two years ago, it included an option for 'non-food retail' or 'light industrial' uses.
SCL has now requested a variation of the option to include two food retail units, comprising 18,800 and 11,000 square feet, respectively.
The company has previously said it intended to develop the site by building a trade and retail park.
Council cabinet member for resources, Cllr Stuart Hutchinson, has agreed to the new terms using delegated decision-making powers.
