Round the island - Spinnakers and Chairs

LR-7867 - The boats are quite away off shore in Sandown bay, running a diagonal between Ventnor to the east of Bembridge ledge. A bit of juxtapositioning with the deck chairs and spinnakers might work for a shot. Stopped and had breakfast so there's quite a few candid's to come later.

Round the Island - Warming up

LR-7773 - Short drive along the coast to Brook bay and found this pair on the beach warming, I did sort of suggest that the sun was running along that row of yachts at one point in the conversation. Will admit the blood drained appearance of both parties gave a little clue to how cold they were!

Round the Island - Freshwater Lifeboat (FLB) returning from a shout (story below)

LR-7687 - Moving on from Fort Albert to the south side of the island into Freshwater Bay, taken during the J P Morgan round the Island race, originally I thought the crew were just coming backing from patrol, but they had been called out to assist someone.
I do not know all the detaIls and you will know as much as I do by looking at the images below.

If you feel like donating to the organisation or want to know about their work all funded by charity please visit the website
Freshwater Independent Lifeboat operates 2 boats 24/7 in an area up to 30M off shore from Hurst Point to St Catherine’s point on the Isle of Wight.

Entirely independent we rely on donations and fundraising by our volunteers to run this service.

LR-7545 - another with a little bit of foreground interest, so many boats, so many photographers there must have been 40-50 photographers at this site, plus mobile camera's, ipads and anything else you can a picture with, in total there must be a photographer for every boat. Many with there camera's set on a tripod, operated by remote and clicking each time a different boat came into the frame.

Scarecrow Candid - Magic bag containing a Gun

LR-3174 - Oh Tinky Winky, homosexual icon, gun shooter what ever next.

Tinky Winky (played by Dave Thompson, Mark Heenehan, and Simon Shelton) is the first Teletubby. He is the largest and oldest of the Teletubbies, is covered in purple terrycloth, and has a triangular antenna on his head. He is notable for the red luggage he always carries. His character has caused controversy following allegations that his character's behaviour, bag and body colour have stereotypical homosexual qualities.

You just have to love professional and group opinions
Tinky Winky started a still hinted-at controversy in 1999 because of his carrying a bag that looks much like a woman's handbag (although he was first "outed" by the academic and cultural critic Andy Medhurst in a letter of July 1997 to The Face).[citation needed] He aroused the interest of Jerry Falwell in 1999 when Falwell alleged that the character was a "gay role model". Falwell issued an attack in his National Liberty Journal, citing a Washington Post "In/Out" column which stated that lesbian comedian Ellen DeGeneres was "out" as the chief national gay representative, while trendy Tinky Winky was "in." He warned parents that Tinky Winky could be a covert homosexual symbol, because "he is purple, the gay pride color, and his antenna is shaped like a triangle: the gay pride symbol."[6]

The BBC, who co-produced the programme, made an official response, "Tinky Winky is simply a sweet, technological baby with a magic bag." Ken Viselman of Itsy-Bitsy Entertainment, who distributed the show in the USA, commented, "He's not gay. He's not straight. He's just a character in a children's series."

In May 2007, Polish Ombudsman for Children Ewa Sowińska revisited the matter, and planned to order an investigation. She said in the 28 May 2007 edition of Wprost [full citation needed] that the handbag-carrying Tinky Winky could promote homosexuality. Journalists from Wprost mentioned claims that the Teletubbies promote homosexuality, to which Sowińska replied that she had heard of the issue. The journalists then asked about Tinky Winky. "I noticed that he has a woman's handbag, but I didn't realize he's a boy," Sowińska told the magazine, adding, "Later I learned that there could be some hidden homosexual undertones." Sowińska said she would ask her office's psychologists to look into the allegations, "and judge whether it can be shown on public television and whether the suggested problem really exists."

But on 30 May 2007, Sowińska said in a public statement that she no longer suspected the Teletubbies of promoting homosexuality. She said: "The opinion of a leading sexologist, who maintains that this series has no negative effects on a child's psychology, is perfectly credible. As a result I have decided that it is no longer necessary to seek the opinion of other psychologists."

Despite the objections, the Independent on Sunday's editors included Tinky Winky as the only fictional character in the 2008 inaugural "Happy List", alongside 99 real-life adults recognised for making Britain a better and happier place.

Scarecrow Candid - Keeping the Bee's

LR-3201 - Listening to a quiz show the other day and the question was who if affected by the Isle of Wight Disease (multiply choice answers). Answer Bee's
Acarapis woodi is a small parasitic mite that infests the airways of the honey bee. The first known infestation of the mites occurred in the British Isles in the early 20th century. First observed on the Isle of Wight in 1904, the mystery illness known as Isle of Wight Disease was not identified as being caused by a parasite until 1921. It quickly spread to the rest of Great Britain. It was regarded as having wiped out the entire native bee population of the British Isles (although later genetic studies have found remnants that did survive) and it dealt a devastating blow to British beekeeping. Brother Adam at the Buckfast Abbey developed a resistant hybrid bee known as the Buckfast bee, which is now available worldwide to combat acarine disease.

Diagnosis for tracheal mites generally involves the dissection and microscopic examination of a sample of bees from the hive.

Acarine mites, formerly known as tracheal mites are believed to have entered the US in 1984, via Mexico.

Mature female acarine mites leave the bee's airway and climb out on a hair of the bee, where they wait until they can transfer to a young bee. Once on the new bee, they will move into the airways and begin laying eggs.

You’ll be relieved to hear that the Isle of Wight is ranked pretty well in most categories against the rest of the UK. The Island is ranked 49th out of 150 local authorities for premature deaths between 2009-2011.

Gatcombe and Chillerton 2013 Scarecrow Festival

The Scarecrow Festival is now on!
A by yearly event
Where is it? Throughout the villages of Gatcombe and Chillerton

Which Way?
There are signposts throughout the parish, to point you in the right direction, however, a suggested starting point would be Cox’s Corner PO30 3EE on your sat nav, then turn up Rectory Lane, towards Gatcombe. Then back down onto the main Newport to Chillerton Road, turn right and head for Chillerton.

It’s FREE!
Yes, the best part is that it is totally free, so come along and bring all the family, and spend an hour or two enjoying the spectacle.

A cup of tea, and a slice of cake, Aunt Sally?
Need a break after walking around the exhibits?
Refreshments are available from the Chillerton Village Hall each day from 11.00am to 4.00 pm. Rest your feet and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea, or coffee, and a slice of home baked cake for an incredible price of just £1

Far away from the madding crowds - Squirrel picnic

LR-8180 - Red Squirrel Alverstone Mead Local Nature Reserve
Far away from the madding crowds at the Isle of Wight festival on the Southern side of the island near Sandown is a very quiet place off the Newport to Sandown railway track (now a footpath/bridleway). Popped over whilst I had use of a 70-200mm lens with a Mk III x 2 extender in the hope of filing a CF card with picture of squirrels (yep saw the same two twice in a hour visit). Further information on Red Squirrels click me to find out about 3,500 inhabitants.

Visitor a trio - Clean and strutting their funky stuff

LR-8941 - A trio of festival goer's taken at Ryde Interchange (aka the bus station), these likely lads are travelling light compared to many of the others spotted.
Yep, you've guessed it after boring you with the round the island race, I suspect there will be a number of Isle of Wight Festival shots over the next week or so. Still contemplating if I should enter the mud pit on Sunday to see Bon Jovi's three hour set and roll about in some mud, but the weather is not particularly nice and I currently have my sensible head on!
Wonder if they will look this clean by Sunday night?

Traveller Contemporary - after Martin Jennings

LR-11309 - After my visit to St Pancras and travelling back to Portsmouth, here is a contemporary traveller at Guildford station, subconsciously inspired by Martin Jennings statute of Sir John Betjeman. Not sure it is as striking could probably do with a hat!

Traveller Contemporary Sculpture

LR-11264 - Another from the St Pancras visit - Sir John Betjeman was responsible for saving the Station and the Chambers from demolition in the 1960's. In tribute to the famous poet and railway enthusiast an 8.5ft sculpture by Martin Jennings has been designed to celebrate the man and his poetry.

Destruction or Preservation!

LR-10415 - Never sure with the Forestry commission whether it's destruction or preservation or even logical, the problem is coppicing seems to be harvesting mature tree's as opposed to thinning. The area in the forest/woods was already cut at the end of last year, leaving large gaps between the trees enabling Buzzards to swoop down along quite clear runways and pick off the Red Squirrels previously protected by the woodland canopy.
This looks an expensive bit of kit and along with it's collection truck makes very short work of cutting down something that took years to grow.
Have to wonder if the commission actually know what the contractors are doing or just pleased to see a cheque come in for the timber.

Well I think the new Flickr is .......

LR-11168 - plenty of dicussion on the new Flickr interface today then.
Mixed feelings but working with it to see how I get on and looking at alternatives.
For me the fact there is little logic behind the purpose of the new interface apart from its beautiful makes you wonder if the business actually knows what it is doing, ok you new broom at the top in Yahoo, but what else are they up to, what's next.
The disappointed on the whole thing is that we are no longer considered customers in the blurb. The layering of important functions will certainly hinder people putting on quality supporting text and therefore impacting on those who use that data set.
Does Flickr understand how Flickr is used, it appears not from the change and their customers feedback.
Makes you wonder if we all deleted our Exif data and did not bother with location data if the business would be impacted, surely somebody in Flickr/Yahoo is selling that stuff to marketeers, Camera companies and so on.
Do they understand their contributors, that's pretty clear they do not and how the different types of customers use the data store.

Reflective Trash Tusday

LR-11233 - Back to the wall of steel and trash-man, one thing I did notice in Sheffield is how clean the streets are, not only in areas such as by the station but just generally. Hat's off to the team that perform that role.
